Book Review - Checkout

Book Review - Checkout: The step by step, 7C method to build a dominant ecommerce brand. By Neil Verma & Ren Moulton.

A great book which lays down steps on how to build an ecommerce brand.

7C
Core
Customer
Community
Competition
Creative
Content
Channels

While all this aligns to classical models of:

 -STP (Segmentation, Targeting & Positioning),
-Consumer Behaviour (Maslow's theory),
-Porter's 5 Foces Model
-Branding (purpose- concentric circles to persona)
-Content ( storybrand model)
-IMC (amplification across 360 touch points)
....and so on; it seems like a great summarized playbook for online first marketers.

4️⃣ things you shouldn't ignore while building a product?

4️⃣ things you shouldn't ignore while building a product?

Here is some advice posted from time to time "when u r building new products" -

1. Ask what is the nth order result that a consumer wants from my product?

-Not a quarter inch drill bit for a hole, but to look good on zoom!

2. Ask whom to build a product for?

- Never build a product that will appeal to everyone!

3. Ask what could make my product remarkable?

- How about a purple cow in the sea of white and browns?

4. Ask what ingredients will make my product go viral?

-Its possible to do it while building the products vs thinking of viral marketing later!

Does marketing need to be real? No.

Is news real? No.

Does marketing need to be real? No.

👉#CGI (computer graphics Imagery)

Globally CGI this year has taken the marketing world by storm with most of us netizens having seen giant installations on our insta or YT feeds.

Be it Barbie the movie or designer brands or cosmetic brands, those videos have amassed huge views & engagement on social media.

🇮🇳Even, in India we are now seeing the trend getting started with Ajio using it to promote thier sale (A giant shoe on a bridge).

👉Virtual Hoardings

Another trend is the virtual hoarding narrative on social (started with zomato blinkit), a lot of brands simply kept tagging along (like here by Netflix) to ride the moment.

-No mega investment. Single OOH or even not that.

- What's needed is intelligent copy.

💡Why this makes sense?

-Given, a large section of population today doesnt 'look up' from their mobile screens to see actual OOH and installations; it's prudent to go virtual with them!

-With automated driving & large screens becoming more real in future, the value of actual billboards on the road will drop, esp in big cities.

Isn't the real world #OOH diminishing?

Agree?

World Heart Day & a brand's tryst with Crisis

A brand story on World Heart Day!🫀

One brand story that comes to mind on Heart day is that of Fortune cooking oil & that of Sourav Ganguly.

👉Proposition

The brand proposition that its ingredients keep food tasty & healthy for heart against cholesterol esp for people over 40.

👉Brand Ambassador

Dada, the flamboyant cricketer & ex-captain, was rightly chosen to deliver the message - dada bole welcome to 40s.

👉Crisis

-In Jan 2021, dada suffered a cardiac arrest amidst time when the ATL campaigm was on.

-People started taking potshots at the brand with even cricketers tweeting the brand + celeb health misconnection.

💡Brand Response

-It rightly stopped all ATL and messaged for recovery of the celeb.

-Post recovery, dada also came out with a statement stating the history of heart ailments in his family.

- On valentines day, the brand came out with communication with dada with a good message on heart health!

👉The greatest thing a brand can do esp when a celeb is going thru a health crisis is to NOT drop the celeb!

👉Because consumers see such brands as trustworthy who do the right thing in crises.

🙏Btw, take time to reflect if there are any good practices or habits you should embrace for life to take care of your heart - physical exercise, meditation etc.
