MBA, Lies and Essays!!

This person comes back again to this Blog, to write another senti story! What i found recently is that writing essay for Bschool admissions is all about lying. No matter what you are and who you are, your essay should be something that gives a great impression that this person is born to get into this school!

I would not get into whether it is justified to do it or not. Who said that you cannot lie? What matters is that its the result that should matter. If you are succeeding, then no body cares you wrote the truth or not. And yes who told you that you should be a satyawadi harishchandra....

Its all about business and free markets and competition. Whatever sells is true! As simple as that. And who said that life is fair. One has to deal with it. If there are 100 copycats and one 'real' thing; if the real thing cannot sell it to the audience despite of being true!! Its your fault, you aren't a right person to get into this business!

The bottomline is - Whatever sells is 'real' and not the otherway round.

If you start off with this mentality, then you'll never be able to write an essay. What is an essay?? It's your own story, the path you've tread so far, the ambitions you are nurturing, the plans you have to achieve them and what is that special thing about you that should get you into this special school (No, you don't have to be a rockstar). All this is definitely not a lie but yes, i agree, it's a marketing exercise.

To that extent if you say that you've been a loser so far with nothing to do in life that's why you want to do an MBA (at some stages of our careers we all feel like losers) Ofcourse, who wants a loser in their school. ....but same feeling can be conveyed in a better, more appreciative way like ---you can say that you have xyzeeee skills and want to gain abceeee skills to achieve your goals & fulfill your ambitions. It's simple - how you want to shape your story! An essay is also to an extent a critique of yourself!

I believe attitude is key! We all start with a certain uneasiness (you shud describe this uneasiness becoz this is the reason, you are looking to do an MBA)...we tell ourselves, there is something missing in our career (pen down what's missing, doesn't matter if it's sketchy)....we have vague thoughts of where we could be (pen down, whatever these thoughts, however vague they might be)...and then ask yourself...DID YOU LIE??? I hope you'd say, NO I DIDN'T!!

All the best! It's your story, you own it, how can it be a lie!

interesting blog, at the very least. AG adds spice to your blog - she does have a knack of finding newbies, or do newbies find her...

the mast looks cool - all out for ISB - all the best....

it depends on how u look at it actually ..
if you want urself to feel sad about it .. its all a lie .. and if u usually like to think of urself as an honest individual .. u'll justify it by the animal instinct of self preservation coupled with a human extinct of self expansion ..
AND
if you are not feeling all that masochist and want to be happy ... u'll not actually justify the wrongs you put in it .. u'll say what this lady from atta has just said .. a 'marketing exercise' .. or something like well-this-is-how-it-works-in-real-world ..etc etc .

and you know what the fun is .. you just cant get out of feeling 'gud' or 'bad' about it ...atleast i havent figured out a way ..and something tells me that there IS a more mature outlook ... and yes you can call me a theist then ...

Well interesting thoughts .. although I disagree with them . Personally, I honestly use my experiences to respond to the essays..

Am I planning to use certain experiences to position me to the admissions committee? Yes .. but that does not mean I am telling a lie .. I am just being selective.

hey atta girl, here in india atleast it doesnt matter if you lie or not. the IIMs want a certain kinda profile and they get it. it has nothing to do with management really. its just what the recruiters want! the IIMs are not about management but silly institutes fighting over petty things as to who gets the highest salary and how their average salary has risen by 2 lakhs!

so there! i guess ISB is no different even if it follows the US process
